The introduction of online education in Australia has created a world of opportunity for the many students who have been searching for a flexible, cost-effective means of learning. Studying online in Australia is becoming an increasingly popular choice for Australian residents and international students who appreciate Australia’s world-class educational reputation and affordable cost of living. In short, online education in Australia offers students an excellent combination of quality, price, and flexibility.

For students with limited budgets and time clocks, online education in Australia is an ideal choice. Not only do students save money on tuition through enrollment in an online program, but they save time and money because transportation to a classroom is not required. Online education has advanced since its inception to include video conferencing and live discussions. Students are often able to begin their coursework on a date that meets their needs, and can learn at a pace that is compatible with their own individual learning styles.

The first completely online educational provider in Australia is The Australian Online Institute (AOI Institute). The AOI Institute was established in 2003 and has recently expanded its scope to reach overseas students. The AOI Institute offers specialized online degree programs in hospitality and electro-technology. Students are able to pay their tuition in small monthly installments and the job placement record is outstanding at 100%.

Other examples of the many online educational institutions in Australia are Jones International University (JIU) and Australian Catholic University (ACU). Both institutions are accredited and offer students a large variety of available courses. Among the most popular classes are those focusing on business, education, information technology, and nursing. Students receive individual attention when needed and have access to a variety of online resources. For instance, ACU students can take advantage of 24 hour a day telephone support and an expansive electronic library.

In sum, online education in Australia enables students to learn at their own pace while maximizing time and money spent on their education. Online education has evolved and expanded to include advanced learning tools such as video conferencing and electronic libraries. As evidenced by high job placement records among graduating students and the increasing enrollment among international students across the globe, Australian online education has been a success.

Monday, 2 August 2010

Writers, readers, publishers and managers – are you a human rights hero?

The Australian Human Rights Commission is calling on movers and shakers in the non-fiction literature world to nominate themselves for this year’s prestigious Literature (non-fiction) Award in the annual Human Rights Medals and Awards.

Commission President Catherine Branson QC, said the Awards presented the opportunity to honour those who have dedicated their time and resources to chronicle important human rights issues in Australia.

“For one day of the year, the annual Human Rights Medals and Awards shines the spotlight on the efforts people are making on a daily basis to strengthen Australia’s human rights culture,” President Branson said.

“These efforts impact on us all, and ultimately contribute in some way to making Australia a safer and more inclusive society. The annual Human Rights Medals and Awards is an opportunity to applaud their efforts and to say thank you.”

The Literature (non-fiction) Award is sponsored by the Co-op Bookshop and is for a non-fiction work(including social history, social commentary, biography or documentary) published in Australia between 10 October 2009 and 4 October 2010.

Winner of the 2009 Award for her book, Blind Conscience, Margot O’Neill, said receiving the Award was a fantastic honour which also fuelled the attention of some TV producers and directors.

“Many books touching on human rights often find it difficult to move beyond a niche audience but this award helps authors lift the public profile of their work. Good luck to this year’s entrants – it’s worth the effort!” Ms O’Neill said.

Nominations are also being called for the Human Rights Medal and Young People’s Human Rights Medal and six other Award categories: Law, Community (Organisation), Community (Individual), Print Media, Television and Radio.

The Australian Human Rights Commission has a web-section containing all the information about the 2010 Human Rights Medals and Awards, including Award categories, how to enter, judging criteria, previous winners and how to buy a ticket to the awards ceremony.

There’s also a section for media, with the latest news releases, and information about the sponsors for this year’s Award ceremony which are: Rio Tinto; the Department of Immigration and Citizenship; the Law Council of Australia; iHR Australia; Avant Card; Trophyland; The Co-op Bookshop; Online Opinion and Vibe Australia.

Nominations close at 5pm on Monday, 4 October, 2010. Winners will be presented with their Medals and Awards at a ceremony to be held on Human Rights Day, Friday, 10 December 2010 at the Sheraton on the Park in Sydney.

The Australian Tax Organization (ATO) recently announced a new compliance program for the 2010-2011 year. Among the compliance program objectives are the prevention of tax refund fraud, the identification of businesses engaging in tax evasion, and a stringent focus on highly wealthy individuals. The program will be characterized by enhanced technology designed to improve inaccurate refund claims. Australian citizens are encouraged to carefully review the basis for their receipt of a tax refund – what you need to know may help you avoid an audit.

The compliance program will involve the analysis of over 500 million taxpayer transactions to confirm whether citizens are properly declaring their income. Among the transactions that will be reviewed are property transfers, overseas wire transfers, bank account information, and investments. Special attention will be devoted to individuals with a net wealth of $30 million or more.

In addition to reviewing individual taxpayer transactions, the program will involve an audit of over 26,000 micro businesses. The audit will be conducted as part of an effort to identify businesses that evade tax by hiding income through the use of cash transactions. Employer activity will also be monitored to make sure that withholding obligations are met and that employers properly make employee super payments. This process will involve an exploration of over 17,500 employee complaints regarding unpaid super.

As efforts to detect tax evasion are carried out, the ATO recognizes that citizens and businesses are still recovering from the poor economy. Citizens are encouraged to contact the ATO to discuss the possibility of special payment arrangements if they are unable to meet their tax obligations.

Australian Curriculum

In 2008 all Australian governments agreed that a quality education for all young Australians is critical to maintaining Australia’s productivity and quality of life. They agreed that a national curriculum would play a key role in delivering quality education and committed to the development of a K–12 national curriculum, initially in the areas of English, mathematics, science and history.

Subsequently, all Australian education ministers committed to a set of educational goals and actions to better prepare young people for their participation in a changing and increasingly globalised world. One of these actions was the development and implementation of a worldclass national curriculum. This commitment by ministers is captured in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians.

For most people with a disability, support and assistance comes mainly from family and friends. However, governments provide a range of services both directly and indirectly to help those with disabilities and the private and community sectors also provide significant resources in this regard. As well as disability specific services and support, the government, private and community sectors also provide a range of mainstream services (for example, health services) that people with a disability have access to. Because there is a mix of mainstream and disability-specific programs and services it is difficult to get an accurate picture of the extent of funding and support to the disability population.
